Role synopsis

    The Acetyls Projects, Engineering and Licensing Team is part of Petrochemicals Technology with offices based in Hull. The role of the team is to provide engineering and operations technology specific input to support technology development, growth projects and operating assets.

    The post holder is responsible for providing mechanical discipline assistance to the delivery of Acetyls projects. They are also required to provide expert mechanical advice to the development of Acetyls technologies and Acetyls manufacturing sites globally including TAR and troubleshooting support. They will act as a Subject Matter Expert in appropriate areas for both Acetyls Technical Practices and BP Group Engineering Practices. They will develop and maintain networks with experts both inside and outside BP, with industry, and with suppliers and vendors.

Key accountabilities

    Leads mechanical engineering support to all major Acetyls projects through all stages including the development of the initial design and specifications, and is a key contributor to the development and delivery of the Engineering Packages as part of Acetyls Core Engineering Team.

    Provides specialist design and fabrication knowledge and experience to support the Acetyls operating assets through the provision of day to day advice, guidance on equipment inspection and maintenance, TAR support, and risk evaluation during normal operation.

    Identifies any requirement for, and co-ordinates use of, third party expertise to support Acetyls Technology Group activities and Acetyls manufacturing assets worldwide.

    Accountable for best practice knowledge transfer, and acts as a role model within their field, coaching and mentoring individuals within the organisation, including JV’s and project team engineers.

    Technical supervision and mentoring for the Acetyls Mechanical Graduate in their support of both Global Acetyls assets and Acetyls technology activities.

    Ensures that mechanical related HSSE incidents and shared learning are fully understood by the operation assets and embedded into the Technology package.

    Develops networks with other mechanical related experts both within BP and wider industry.

Manages key relationships with related suppliers / vendors and network with R&M Procurement as appropriate.
Essential Education

    Degree in Mechanical Engineering

    Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers

Essential experience and job requirements

    Significant demonstrable technical and operational experience within the mechanical engineering speciality; design, construction and operation of manufacturing process plant and facilities ideally with in the Acetyls industry or Petrochemicals industry.

    Experience in equipment specification and selection for major capital projects, working with engineering contractors, plant engineers, and efficient problem resolution.

    A broad understanding of materials of construction found in the Petrochemicals industry an awareness of corrosion mechanisms.

    In depth technical proficiency; a discipline expert with great understanding of technical practices and industry codes/standards relating to the Petrochemical industry.

    Proven track record of technical leadership and ability to build strong collaborative work relationships with the line and teams located across the organisation, including a record of technical excellence and delivery in technology and manufacturing environments.

    Strong business sense, commercial acumen, experience of working with relevant vendors/consultants.

    Well networked within chemical industry’s equipment fabrication and supply and materials engineering communities.

    Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate technical matters with all levels of the business, a team player.

    Able to provide mechanical, maintenance and inspection training and coaching to licensees and operating asset engineering teams.

Other Requirements (e.g. Travel, Location)

    Able to commit to international travel for extended periods.

Desirable criteria & qualifications

    Demonstrated ability to work independently and able to focus effort and prioritize work to deliver business value, whilst also having experience of working effectively in a multi-cultural and geographically extended setting.

    Physically able to perform confined space entries, climbing, and other physical activities involved with process equipment inspection, able to undertake long haul air travel to execute asset and vendor visits and assessments.
