Geomechanics Rock Analysis Engineer
Location: Houston - United States
The Geomechanics Rock Analysis Engineer conducts rock mechanics tests and evaluations via laboratory scaled model testing for oil/gas, mining and civil engineering industries, universities, and government agencies. This requires a strong knowledge of Geomechanics, mechanics of discontinuous media, and related instrumentation and feedback control systems necessary for Rock Mechanics measurements.
Responsibilities:
Has knowledge/experience of complex load (stress) frame equipment
Has knowledge/experience of Rock Mechanics tests
Provides input to design and construct laboratory test programs to simulate Geomechanics problems
Responsible for detailed specification of scaled model tests.
Does data reduction using Excel templates, MATLAB programs, or similar. Data reduction consists of taking raw data generated from various testing machines, placing it into a usable, client friendly format, and then tabulating the desired rock properties and figures into a concise format.
Responsible for documentation of all aspects of the tests. Must conduct post-test analysis for the evaluation of results. Must produce comprehensive reports including procedures, preparation, instrumentation and analysis of results.
Advises oil/gas clients on drilling, stimulation, and reservoir depletion/injection, and sanding problems, and on potential Geomechanics issues and solutions
Advises non-oil/gas clients on potential Geomechanics issues and solutions
May be responsible for checking in core, creating inventory lists of material received, and identifying the received condition of material
May be responsible for shipping all samples and carcass material back to client at end of a project
Must be able to work on multiple projects during a typical work day
Qualifications:
Masters in Mining or Geotechnical Engineering, with emphasis on Rock Mechanics, Soil Mechanics or mechanics of discontinuous media
Minimum 10 years’ related experience with experimental Rock Mechanics work
Candidates must be able to legally work and reside in the US, without sponsorship
Knowledge & Skills:
Testing procedures for Rock Mechanics testing
Numerical methods and numerical software for use in Geomechanics
Strong problem solving capabilities while working under pressure on multiple projects of medium complexity
Strong skills in techniques, tools, processes and practices in Rock Mechanics domain
Can function independently and in a team
Strong project management skills, able to write technical proposals, run multiple concurrent technical projects, set testing parameters for lab crew, reduce/interpret/QC data, and write detailed technical reports
Strong oral and written communication skills
Conveys information fluently, interpreting and clarifying details and explaining rationale
