Laboratory Supervisor – GeoMechanics
Location: Houston - United States
The Laboratory Supervisor – GeoMechanics is responsible for coordination and supervision of various technical laboratory operations and managing a team of laboratory specialists.
The role requires technical competency and specialized knowledge of sample preparation and QC, Rock Mechanics testing processes and analysis. He/she is responsible for training of new staff and development of all other laboratory specialists. He/she prepares work plan for laboratory operations and ensures timely execution and communicates with Data Quality Engineers (DQE) to ensure that data is of the highest quality. He/she communicates with Project Engineers/Managers (PE/PM) and Laboratory Manager (LM) to ensure that the laboratory analyses achieve the client’s goals. He/she coaches and mentors laboratory staff and provides input to competency development.
Responsibilities:
Responsible to maintain a safe and healthy working environment in the rock laboratory.
Maintains Project Plan for all resources (people and equipment) in implementation of efficient operation of laboratory. Initiate and execute lab projects in a timely manner.
Controls quality of data being passed to data reduction team.
Liaises with the QHSE supervisor to ensure that all company QHSE policies are observed in the laboratory. Actively participates in loss prevention programs when needed.
Keeps PE/PM and LM regularly updated on status of all active projects.
Ensures maintenance, calibration and certification status of the various analysis systems using company Review and Inspection of Tools and Equipment (RITE) system. This covers mandatory periodic calibrations of all equipment (including pressure gauges, transducers, temperature probes and all analytical equipment), performing re-calibration as applicable after maintenance jobs on any equipment. Ensures maintenance of all third party manufactured laboratory equipment as per manufacturer’s recommendation.
Maintain stock control systems for spare parts and initiate purchase orders as needed.
Establishes and maintains an inventory system via company Clarity system to record the sample movement. Compliance to company Sample Management standard.
Proactively ensure that the appropriate level of Hazard Analysis and Risk Control (HARC) is conducted, documented and valid HARC is in placed throughout all laboratory operations.
Supervise the dismantling and rebuilding of analysis equipment for routine maintenance and redressing.
Ensure work is carried out compliant to company Pressure Operations Manual (POM) and that personnel maintain their certifications.
Responsible for the supervision of lab specialists for correct sample handling, labeling and shipping of dangerous goods (DG). Closely liaises with logistics on 100% compliant DG goods shipment guidelines.
Ensures compliance with all company policies and Quest certifications of all lab personnel.
Maintains confidentiality of company data and documentation as per company Standard 21.
Proactively involved in all new technology introduction plans.
Set objectives for lab staff and conduct their appraisals.
Trains new recruits so as to enable them to conduct the measurements independently.
Qualifications:
Degree in Mechanical, Mining or Geotechnical Engineering, with emphasis on Rock Mechanics, Soil Mechanics or mechanics of discontinuous media
Minimum 10 years’ related experience with experimental Rock Mechanics work, load frame operations, and lab supervision.
Specific Knowledge & Skills:
Strong background in HP/HT Rock Mechanics laboratory testing essential
Must be able to calibrate, verify, and run multiple types of load frames
Must be able to troubleshoot, and to direct troubleshooting of, load frame equipment issues (hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, software)
Must be able to recognize, troubleshoot, and understand questionable test results
Must be knowledgeable of ISRM and ASTM standards applicable to Rock Mechanics testing
Theoretical background in Rock Mechanics theory and value of testing highly recommended
Must be able to direct team to operate multiple sets of equipment
Must be able to manage multiple simultaneous projects, changing on a daily basis, depending on client deadlines, available resources (people, equipment), change orders
Must be able to successfully interact with lab crews, maintenance team, PE/PM team, LM, and clients to achieve positive project outcomes
Must be able to manage resources on multiple shifts, if needed
Must be able to make accurate and up to date projections on project timing, given variable resources
Must have detailed knowledge of Rock Mechanics sample preparation methods & QC, including unconsolidated sample handling and preparation
